Melbourne: Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Tuesday notched a unique record in the morning session on Day 4 of the Boxing Day Test MCG on Tuesday.
Ashwin, a veteran of 73 Tests, surpassed legendary Muttiah Muralitharan to become the bowler to dismiss the most number of left-handed batsmen in Test cricket when he bamboozled Josh Hazlewood for 10 to help India bowl out Australia for 200 in their second innings.
Hazlewood became 192th left-hander to be dismissed by Ashwin which is the most by any bowler in the history of Test cricket.
Earlier, the record belonged to Sri Lankan spin maestro Muralitharan. The off-spinner from the island nation had claimed 191 southpaws in his legendary career in which he claimed a total of 800 wickets.
The list is followed by England pacer James Anderson (186), Australian legends Glenn MacGrath (172), Shane Warne (172) and former India captain and bowling legend Anil Kumble, who dismissed 167 left-handed batsmen.
After Australia were bowled out for 200, India needed to chase down a 70-run target to level the series. India did the job with eight wickets in hand.
Ashwin finished the match with a fifer, three wickets in first innings and two in the second.
Captain Ajinkya Rahane was conferred with the Man of the Match award for his 112.
