All-round Bangladesh beat Windies by 8 wickets

Bangladesh's win meant Shai Hope's 109, his second in as many matches, went in vain.

Dublin: Captain Mashrafe Mortaza led Bangladesh's fightback before opening pair of Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar impressed with the bat as the subcontinent side notched a convincing eight-wicket win over Windies here on Tuesday.

Bangladesh's win meant Shai Hope's 109, his second in as many matches, went in vain. Hope's innings laid a solid foundation for Windies' innings but they let the stronghold in the match slip away once Mortaza dismissed the former on team score 207. Yet, Windies managed to set 262 runs target for Bangladesh in 50 overs. Mortaza finished the match with three scalps for 49 runs.

In response, Tamim (80) and Soumya (73) built 144 runs partnership and set the stage for Bangladesh's eight-wicket win. Tamim, who played 116 deliveries, decorated his innings seven boundaries while Soumya hit nine boundaries and a six during his quickfire innings that came at a strike-rate of 107.

After their dismissals Shakib-Al-Hasan took up the responsibility to finish off the proceeding with an unbeaten 61 off as many balls as Bangladesh, who beat the West Indies in two one-day international series in 2018, winning the match with five overs to spare.

Earlier, Windies captain Jason Holder winning the toss opted to bat first and Hope carried on his excellent form against Ireland in the triangular series opener where he slammed a magnificent 170 while sharing 365 runs highest ever opening wicket stand with John Campbell.

On Tuesday Hope and Sunil Ambris shared 89 runs opening wicket partnership. Later, he and Roston Chase (51) added 115 runs for the third wicket, but they were restricted by Shakib and Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

Hope was eventually caught at cover off Mortaza which saw Windies slipping away from a good start to set a decent target for Bangladesh.

Bangladesh will play their next match against Ireland on Thursday.
