Chester-le-Street: A valiant effort from Nicholas Pooran almost helped West Indies steal a victory from the hands of Sri Lanka here at Durham, however, in the end, Sri Lanka defeated West Indies by 23 runs.
Chasing a target of 339, Windies started on a poor note losing two wickets inside 5 overs. However, a blistering century by Nicholas Pooran coupled with a quick-fire 51 by Fabian Allen almost salvaged a victory for West Indies. Angelo Matthews, however, dismissed Pooran getting him caught behind the wicket by keeper Perera. Express pacer, Lasith Malinga was the pick of the bowlers for Sri Lanka as the veteran quickster picked up 2 wickets for his side.
Earlier, Avishka Fernando's maiden ODI ton helped Sri Lanka post a mammoth target of 338/6. Opting to bowl first, West Indies hoped for early wickets to dismantle the Sri Lankan innings and bundle them for below-par total, however, Lankan openers Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Perera had other things in their mind as the duo stitched a 93 runs opening stand to help The Lions lay a solid foundation.
