New Delhi: Kapil Dev, who guided India to their first World Cup victory in 1983, feels India's Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane should be the first choice for opener Shikhar Dhawan's replacement in the ongoing 2019 World Cup, which started on May 30.
Earlier, during India's league match against Australia, which Men-in-Blue comfortably won by 36 runs, Shikhar Dhawan suffered a thumb injury and has been ruled out from team's next few games. Though the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have opted not to announce his replacement, young wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant has been put on standby.
“If Rahane’s name is being considered then he should be the first choice. He should be picked ahead of Pant and Rayudu. Rahane has experience of playing in big tournaments like the World Cup. He can open the batting and also play in the middle order,” Kapil Dev was quoted as saying.
