Hyderabad: Pakistan cricket fans in Karachi had their hopes of a famous victory over India at the World Cup in England dashed on Sunday after their heroes were well beaten by their arch rivals at Old Trafford in Manchester.

Hundreds gathered around a big screen in the city to watch one of the most eagerly-awaited fixtures at the World Cup - the worldwide TV audience was estimated at more than a billion.

However, early optimism turned to disappointment.

On the other hand, Indian fans were on cloud nine after the Men in Blue register their seventh win in seven World Cup matches against Pakistan.

Fans reaction after India beat Pakistan

India made 336 for 5 from their 50 overs after Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed won the toss and decided to field first.

At one point in their reply, Pakistan stood at 117 for 1 in the 24th over, but a familiar batting collapse saw them lose five wickets for 48 and after a rain delay, Pakistan were set a near-impossible task by the Duckworth-Lewis calculations and they slumped to defeat by 89 runs.

The result leaves Pakistan perilously close to elimination from the competition. They have just three points from five games, with four more to play.

Australia lead the way with eight points from five games, followed by India and New Zealand with seven ponts from four.

Hosts England - who Pakistan beat to register their only win of the tournament so far - are next with six points from four.
