India were off to a poor start while chasing the mammoth total as they lost three quick wickets in the form of Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Ambati Rayadu.
However, MS Dhoni, who was playing at his home, provide stability in the middle but failed to remain on the crease for long as he was sent back to pavilion for 26.
Meanwhile, India skipper Virat Kohli smashed his 41st ODI century to give some hopes to the hosts, but the lower middle order batsmen failed to capitalise on Kohli's ton and gave away their wickets cheaply.
On the other hand, Adam Zampa provided three crucial breakthroughs to Australia by sending back Dhoni, Kohli and Kedar Jadhav.
Also, Pat Cummins and Jhye Richardson bagged three wickets each, while Nathan Lyon picked one wicket for the visitors.
Earlier, Usman Khawaja slammed his maiden ODI century, while skipper Aaron Finch hit 93 to help Australia set 314 runs target for India, who after opting to bowl first, remained wicketless for 31 overs and were completely dominated by the Australian openers.
