Eight nations participated in this mega event. Six test playing nations of that time (Australia , England , West Indies , India , New Zealand & Pakistan) along with two Associate nations -- Sri Lanka and East Africa were split into two groups consisting four countries each. Each team were supposed to play the other three teams in the group once and the top two teams from each group is scheduled to qualify for the semi finals. Each match was of 60 overs per side.

England , New Zealand , West Indies and Australia qualified for the semis where England clashed with Australia while West Indies locked horns with New Zealand in the other semis. Australia and West Indies qualified for the Grand Finale.

In the finals West Indies beat Australia to lift the cup for the first time. It was mainly due to the Caribbean skipper Clive Lloyd who scored an unbeaten 102 and electrified fielding from Vivian Richards , who effected 5 run outs , that the Windies managed to trounce Aussies.

Dennis Amiss , of England , scored the first ton of the series and in reply to England's 344 / 4 with Amiss remaining undefeated on 137 in the inaugural game India finished at 132 for the loss of 3 wickets. The highlight of the Indian innings was Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar batted the entire innings and scored just 36 facing 174 deliveries with just a single hit to the fence.
