New Delhi: Lack of sufficient funds has forced India's star shuttler and current national champion Sourabh Verma and 2014 CWG gold medalist Parupalli Kashyap to arrange funds on their own to take part in the international badminton events like Super Series and Grand Prix.
Unfortunately, these ace players do not fall under the category of top 25 players of BWF world rankings whom the Sports Authority of India (SAI) provide financial assistance.
To get out of the situation, the Indian badminton players' core group has urged the BAI president Himanta Biswa Sarma for funds to compete in the international tournaments.
Interestingly, most of core group players are from the Pullela Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad.
The weird rule of BAI which is in question in this scenario was communicated to the players verbally and there was nothing in writing told a player.
National champions across singles, doubles and mixed doubles categories, who have been affected by the decision have written an official letter to the effect.
Most of the players do not have any private sponsors nor a permanent job hence it might force them to have to quit the sports.
The only thing that these players in the core group are getting is training at the national centre.
The letter also mentions that these players are neglected from the association as the money is diverted towards the established players.
BAI secretary general Ajay Singhania said, "We will soon abolish this practice. BAI is entering into a three-year partnership with the Reliance Foundation and the incoming money from the sponsorship will help all those second lines players who are affected by this top-25 ranking rule."
