Los Angeles: Leonardo DiCaprio says he and Brad Pitt "implicitly" knew how to play the relationship at the center of their new movie 'Once Upon A Time in Hollywood.'

Pitt plays a stuntman and all-around go-fer who works for and is casual friends with DiCaprio's character, a fading star who is looking for a new path in Hollywood in 1969.

DiCaprio's character, Rick Dalton, is forced to make a transition in his career at the same time as Hollywood is transitioning from studio-driven fare to auteur-driven movies like 'Easy Rider.'

The movie's action plays out over the course of three days.

"It's a slice of life. You understand the dynamic of who these people are within a two-day sort of dynamic which is a very interesting thing to do," DiCaprio said.

Margot Robbie plays the real-life actress Sharon Tate, a character who also represents a new Hollywood ethos.

"She represented the good parts and the innocence of that time. And like, the best of what 1969 had to offer you kind of experience through Sharon. And, you know, she's going to a party at the Playboy Mansion with Mama Cass, you know, like, Hollywood was fun and inviting and, you know, a very different version of Hollywood than both Rick and Cliff are experiencing," Robbie said.

'Once Upon A Time in Hollywood' opens in U.S. theatres on July 26.
