New York: Margot Robbie wore two hats on the red carpet on April 28 as 'Dreamland' held its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Robbie both stars in the film, and is producing it through her production company.
The period piece takes place in 1930's America, and stars Robbie as a bank robber, and Finn Cole as a bounty hunter that falls in love with her.
It's reminiscent of 'Bonnie and Clyde', another period piece centring on young lovers on a robbing spree.
"There's elements. I don't think it's a remake of it, but there's definitely that element, obviously with the Eugene-Allison relationship. So, there's elements of that. I think there's a lot of different films that Miles sort of drew upon or used as a touchstone. But I think of it - it's not really to me, it's not really so much a 'Bonnie and Clyde' as a young man's journey transitioning from boyhood to adulthood. That's what it was about," Robbie said.
Robbie's Lucky Chap Entertainment is producing the film, but she doesn't want all of the credit.
"Yeah, it's definitely not just me, so – I work with my best friends. We work really well together, and everyone works hard. We have a good time."
Cole called working with Robbie as a producer and co-star "a true blessing."
"As an actor, you feel so comfortable and you can trust and you can rely on those people so solidly. They made it really, really nice to shoot our movie," Cole said.
Her director, Miles Joris-Peyrafitte had some concerns before the project started that he might encounter problems directing the actress, who is also his boss.
"Honestly I thought it would be. But it wasn't," he says.
But Instead he found she was doing it all for the right reasons.
"She's producing because she really believes in these stories and thinks there's something to be said with them. She knows that she could do that, and she's in a position to be able to do that," Joris-Peyrafitte said.
As a woman at the head of a production company, Robbie says her position on the 50-50 inclusion initiative was too complex for a soundbite.
"I don't think it's quite as simple as that. It depends on the size of your role, etcetera, etcetera. It's probably a bigger conversation – it's probably not something I can sum up in a quick soundbite for you. But I believe in equality, obviously," Robbie said.
'Dreamland' is yet to get a release date.
