The 31st annual Palm Springs Film Festival is ready to honour the Robin Hood actor Jamie Foxx for his incredible performance in the American legal drama Just Mercy.

Los Angeles: Actor Jamie Foxx is all set to receive the spotlight award at the Palm Springs Film Festival in January 2020 for his role in Just Mercy.

The Destin Daniel Cretton directorial depicts the true story of a lawyer attempting to free a man wrongfully convicted of the murder of an 18-year-old girl.

Praising his performance in the film, Festival chairman Harold Matzner said: "In Just Mercy, Jamie Foxx gives a moving and truly remarkable performance as Walter McMillian, a man sentenced to death for a murder, for which he was wrongly convicted."

"This is an inspiring drama that brings an important story about how our justice system can fail to the big screen. It is a story that audiences should see. It is our honour to present the spotlight award, actor to Jamie Foxx," Matzner added.

The Grammy and Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx started out his career as a stand-up comedian.

Later he joined the cast of In Living Color. He then went on to star in his own comedy show titled The Jamie Foxx Show.

The much-awaited annual film festival will commence from January 2 and will conclude on January 13, 2020.

Besides Foxx, the 31st edition of the film fest will also honour Cynthia Erivo for Harriet, Antonio Banderas for Pain and Glory, Laura Dern for Marriage Story, Jennifer Lopez for Hustlers, Zack Gottsagen for The Peanut Butter Falcon, Joaquin Phoenix for Joker, Martin Scorsese for The Irishman, Charlize Theron for Bombshell and Renee Zellweger for Judy.

Past recipients of the spotlight award include Bryan Cranston, Andrew Garfield, Sam Rockwell and J.K. Simmons.
