Los Angeles: Director-producer Justin Lin says he wanted to "correct something that was very wrong" in the Fast and Furious movie franchise following the fan-led #JusticeForHan campaign.

Sung Kang's character, Han Lue, returns in the latest film, Fast 9 -- an unexpected twist after his death was shown in two other Fast films -- first in Tokyo Drift.

The character Deckard Shaw, played by Jason Statham, was shown in Fast and Furious 6 to have killed Han. But when Shaw became friendly with the Fast heroes in later films, and Han wasn't mentioned, fans started their online movement.

"I think if I came back and there was no #JusticeForHan, he would not be back. But because when I was away, I had heard about this movement," Lin said, "and when I asked and looked into what the movement was about, I was equally baffled, you know. And so I felt like if I was going to come back, that should be one of the priorities, is to correct something that was very wrong."

Lin teases a potential Fast prequel telling some more of Han's story.

"You know, my take is that there was a very complex back story that, you know, after if you see Fast 9, if you ever want to, hopefully that story is going to be told one day," he said.

F9 opens in U.S. theatres on June 25.
