Shikara which marks the directorial comeback of Vidhu Vinod Chopra has minted over Rs 1 crore on its opening day at the theatres across India.

Mumbai: Vidhu Vinod Chopra's directorial Shikara: The Untold Story of Kashmiri Pandits, which has hit the big screens on Friday, opened to a whopping Rs 1.20 crore at the box office on the first day of its release.

Film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh stated that the show business gathered momentum in the post noon shows.

Sharing the opening day collection at the box office, Adarsh wrote on Twitter: "#Shikara surprises on Day 1... Released at multiplexes mainly, the biz gathered momentum post noon shows [a norm nowadays]... Needs to double its Day 1 number on Day 2 and maintain the trend on Day 3 for a respectable weekend total... Fri ₹ 1.20 cr. #India biz."

Shikara narrates the story of the mass exodus of Kashmiri Pandits in the Kashmir valley in 1990. It further shows the bond between the lead actors in the worst of times.

The film visualises 40,000 real migrants of Jagti and other camps. It also showcases the real footage from the time of the mass exodus.

The flick is largely shot in the Kashmir Valley and is being promoted mainly as a journey of love between the lead couple.

Bankrolled by Vinod Chopra Productions, the film is distributed by Fox Star Studios.

In other news, actor Aamir Khan has extended warms wishes to Shikara director and producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

He tweeted: "Wishing you all the very best Vinod! Shikara is a film about one of the most tragic events in our recent history. A story that needs to be told."
