Remembering Satyajit Ray: Master filmmaker who changed dimensions of Indian cinema

The legendary Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray left his timeless impressions with his extraordinary cinematic vision. On his 98th birth anniversary, here we bring to you some astounding facts about the Oscar-winning director.

Born on May 2, 1921, in Kolkata, Ray inherited art and music from his grandfather Upendra Kishore Ray who was an acclaimed writer, painter and musician. His father Sukumar Ray was connected to print and journalism.

Satyajit's childhood was full of struggles as he lost his father at the tender age of 3. However, his mother Suprabha brought him up with sheer love and affection. Although Ray was an average student in academics, he was a talented student.

Ray got a fetish for western films and music during his schooling. He even used to stroll at cheap markets to satisfy his thirst for music.

Satyajit completed his graduation in economics from Presidency College following that he went to Shantiniketan for further studies. After five years in 1943, he returned to Kolkata and started working as a graphics designer.

During his tenure, he designed many book covers including Jawaharlal Nehru's 'Discovery of India'. Meanwhile, he also contributed to Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay's famous novel 'Pather Panchali'.

After that, he gradually drifted towards filmmaking and he directed 37 films including feature, documentary and short movies.

Ray's first film 'Pather Panchali' bagged 11 international awards including an honorary 'Hommage à Satyajit Ray' at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival. His other notable works include 'Apur Sansar', 'Aparajito', 'Sonar Kella', 'Charulata' among others.

Ray was expertise in every work related to filmmaking be it scripting, casting, art direction, editing, background music and many more.

Satyajit was bestowed with 32 National awards by the Indian government for his impeccable contribution to filmmaking.

In 1985, Ray was honoured with Dada Saheb Phalke Award. In 1992, he was bestowed Bharat Ratna and an honorary award for his lifetime achievement at the Oscars.

While Ray was yet to receive his Oscar, he suffered a second heart attack and he was hospitalized. After that, the award committee flew to Kolkata to honour him with the prestigious award.

On April 23, 1992, right after a month of receiving the Oscar, Satyajit passed away after suffering a heart attack.

While the legendary artist is no more between us, his dozens of extraordinary pieces of work will stay with us forever.
