  • 1st Filmfare Awards: March 21, 1954

Filmfare, one of the most awaited film award functions in India, was held on March 21, 1954, for the first time. Honouring the best in Hindi cinema in 1953, the award gala was held at Metro Cinema in Mumbai. For the maiden edition, only 5 categories were handed out in a short ceremony compered by actor David who also announced the winners.

In the debut year, Best Actress was won by Meena Kumari for 'Baiju Bawra' while Best Actor went to Dilip Kumar for 'Daag'. Music director Naushad won his first and only Filmfare Award for 'Baiju Bawra'. The final award Best Director was won by Bimal Roy for 'Do Bigha Zamin'. Bima's social drama also won the Best Movie award.

Back then the awards were known as Clare Awards.
