Hyderabad: Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar was all set to helm Takht, a period drama for the first time in his more than two decades old career. His ambitious project, however, got shelved even before it went on floors.

KJo's pet project Takht is a historical drama about the Mughal rivalry for the throne between Aurangzeb and his brother Dara Shukoh. While Ranveer Singh's casting was locked for Dara, Vicky Kaushal was roped in to play Aurangzeb. The film's multi-star cast also included Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor, Bhumi Pednekar, Janhvi Kapoor and Anil Kapoor.

The much-hyped film is reportedly shelved for several reasons one of which is the scale of production. Takht's reported budget is around Rs. 250-300 crores and Dharma Productions has apparently decided to not take the huge risk as they too like every other banner had to bear the brunt of COVID-19.

KJo's banner also has expensive films like Brahmastra and Liger in production or awaiting release, along with medium budget films like Shershaah, Dostana 2, Jug Jugg Jeeyo and Shakun Batra’s next. Adding big-budgeted Takht could be a risky decision for the makers thus the team with a heavy heart has decided to not go ahead with the film.

Meanwhile, Karan will be back at what he does the best. The filmmaker has reportedly commenced work on his next which will be a love story starring Ranveer and Alia. The film is yet to be announced officially.
