'Kabir Singh' director defends film despite severe criticisms

Mumbai: 'Kabir Singh' director Sandeep Reddy Vanga defended his latest box office hit by saying that the critics only talked about "the feminist side" and claimed that they hate him.

In a recent interview to film critic Anupama Chopra, the director has revealed that he was confident of the film that it would make big at the box office.

Speaking more about it, Vanga said: “When I started this film, I knew it would be a big success at the box office, but I never thought that the rage would be repeated, and it has multiplied four times now.”

The film has been at the receiving end of several criticisms. An English national daily has awarded the movie with one and a half stars out of five. The same daily noted: "Kabir Singh applauds its pathetic protagonist, and ends up an obnoxious celebration of toxic masculinity."

When asked about the portrayal of toxic masculinity in the film, the director said: "When you are deeply in love and deeply connected to a woman (and vice versa), if you don’t have the liberty of slapping each other, then I don’t see anything there."

Several film critics have slammed the director for his seemingly inappropriate take in the film. When asked about his reaction to it, the 'Kabir Singh' director said that they are the "parasites who are the real threat to the film industry."

Criticising popular film critic Rajeev Masand, Vanga said: "I see him giving more than three (stars) to stupid films," further adding "Rajeev Masand gave 3.5 (stars) to Sanju - ‘Sanju where is my mangalsutra?’ What happens after that, you can talk volumes about it. Everybody loved it. When he says he slept with 300-odd women, we were all cheering and whistling in the theatre.”

Speaking about a controversial scene from the film where Kabir Singh is seen physically assaulting Preeti, the director explained: "She slapped him without a reason, at least Kabir had a reason to slap her. If you can’t slap, if you can’t touch your woman wherever you want, if you can’t kiss, I don’t see emotion there."

The film has also earned praise from several quarters. The movie which Rajeev Masand gave two stars has garnered over Rs 200 crore.
