Bollywood has been celebrating the colourful festival of Janmashtmi with songs dedicated to Lord Krishna since decades. The trend of breaking 'dahi handis' on-screen started back in 1963 by the first dancing star of India, Shammi Kapoor is still prevalent in Hindi films. Bollywood has been celebrating the colourful festival of Janmashtmi with songs dedicated to Lord Krishna since decades. The trend of breaking 'dahi handis' on-screen started back in 1963 by the first dancing star of India, Shammi Kapoor is still prevalent in Hindi films. As the nation basks in the happiness of Janmashtmi today, ETV Bharat brings to you some of the best songs without which the exuberance of the festival is incomplete.

  • In 1963 film 'Bluffmaster', song Govinda Aala Re features veteran actor Shammi Kapoor breaking 'Dahi handi' exuding high-spirit and exuberance. Set in a crowded Chawl, the song was crooned by the late music wizard Mohammed Rafi while the music was given by Kalyanji-Anandji.

  • In 1974 release 'Badla', Shatrughan Sinha celebrates Janmashtmi in the song 'Shor Mach Gaya Shor Dekho Aaya Makhan Chor'. The song celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna with dhols, nagaras and reciting of Krishna's childhood memories. The superhit track was voiced by Kishore Kumar and composed by Laxminant Pyarelal.

It was sung by legendary singing duo Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar.

The song which still resonates with the audience was crooned by Salman and Alka Yagnik.

The song from 1999 blockbuster family drama 'Hum Saath Saath Hain' features Karisma Kapoor, Sonali Bendre Tabu, Saif Ali Khan and Salman Khan. However, Karisma takes the centerstage as she opens the song dressed as Radha. The hit 90s track was voiced by Kavita Krishnamurthy, Alka Yagnik, Anuradha Paudwal.

Interestingly, the song features a female actor (Sonakshi) breaking the 'Dahi handi' for the first time onscreen. The hit track was chanted by Shreya Ghoshal and Aman Trikha with Himesh Reshammiya's music.

  • And the list cannot be completed without mentioning the latest track 'Radhe Radhe' from the upcoming film 'Dream Girl' starring Ayushmann Khurrana in the lead. While the lyrics of the groovy number is given by Kumaar, Meet Bros and Amit Gupta have lent their voices.
