Earlier, the actor had declared on social media that due to poor health condition he was unable to attend the National Film Awards ceremony.
The announcement for the recipient of this year's Dadasaheb Phalke Award came early in September as Union Minister Prakash Javadekar declared the news on Twitter.
He wrote: "The legend Amitabh Bachchan who entertained and inspired for 2 generations has been selected unanimously for Dadasahab Phalke Award. The entire country and the international community is happy. My heartiest congratulations to him."
The prestigious award is named after the father of Indian cinema, Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, which was instituted in 1969.
Bachchan is a recipient of four National Film Awards for his roles in Agneepath, Black, Paa and Piku.
