At a time when most filmmakers harp on the fact that Bollywood is suffering from a dearth of good scripts, Nishikant Kamat said it's the studios that are sometimes apprehensive about investing in fresh concepts. Thus, remakes are often bankable.

Hyderabad: Even as the nation was yet to recover from the untimely death of young actor Sushant Singh Rajput, the Indian film world received another blow with the demise of filmmaker and critically acclaimed director Nishikant Kamat. Though the notable filmmaker is no more with us, his films shall always rule hearts of cinemagoers cutting across the nation.

He was born on June 17, 1970, in Dadar in the state of Maharashtra, India.

Known for films like Drishyam and Madaari and Mumbai Meri Jaan, Nishikant breathed his last on Monday at a hospital in Hyderabad. He has been undergoing treatment for a chronic liver ailment since July 31.

Nishikant came under the spotlight with his debut film as a director Dombivali Fast for which he also won a National Award for Best Feature Film in Marathi. Apart from his brilliant directing skills, he was also known for his calm and cool demeanour.

Climbing the stairs to the peak of success, he further remade the film Dombivali Fast, in Tamil with R. Madhavan in the lead as Evano Oruvan, which received rave reviews.

Apart from Dombivali Fast, Nishikant also directed many other Marathi films like Lai Bhaari, Fugay, Hava Aney Dey and Saatchya Aat Gharat.

To widened the boundaries, the director set his foot in the Bollywood world with the film titled Mumbai Meri Jaan, based on the 2006 Mumbai Bombings. And proceeded with some remarkable films including Drishyam, Madaari among others.

Being an ace-director, Nishikant also tried his hands in the acting field. He acted in the Marathi films like Saatchya Aat Gharat, Fugay and essayed an antagonist character in Rocky Handsome. In an interview with a leading portal, he once said, "At heart, I am a director, acting is just a hobby."

Nishikant shared a great bond with John Abraham. Talking about his friendship with John, he once told a leading portal, "We are not the type who'd meet every day. We are immersed in our own things. But when we do meet, it feels like we had met yesterday."

Nishikant's last directorial venture was Madaari which starred Irrfan Khan and had garnered rave reviews from the spectators.
