One more held in Jharkhand for duping Punjab CM's wife

A cybercriminal who had duped a sum of As 23 lakh from Parneet Kaur who is an MP and also the wife of Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has been arrested by a team of Jamtara cyber police.

Jamtara (Jharkhand): Police on Thursday arrested one more man from Jamtara town in Jharkhand in a cybercrime case in which Preneet Kaur, Patiala MP and wife of Punjab chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh, was duped of Rs 23 lakh.

The accused person has been identified as Qutubul Ansari of the same locality.

Acting on reliable inputs, police team lead, Jamtara SP Deepak Kumar Sinha arrested Ansari from Dighari village under Narayanpur police station area this afternoon.

During a press meet here, SP Sinha said, "Two cybercriminals had duped the MP in the month of August 2019. Out of the two one identified as Ataul Ansari was arrested and taken away by Punjab Police, the other accused Qutubul Ansari has been arrested today."

"He said that Qutubul is a resident of Dharampur village and after tracking his mobile location, we arrested him. From the arrested, a mobile phone, two sim cards and ATM cards have been also seized. Punjab Police has been also informed as they too were on a lookout for him," he said.

A case under section 420 IPC, 66 and 66 D of IT Act was registered by the police.

Reportedly, Patiala MP and wife of Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, Preneet Kaur, fell prey to an online banking fraud in which Rs 23 lakh were fraudulently withdrawn from her SBI account a year ago.

The mastermind Qutubul Ansari, called up Preneet Kaur when she was attending the Parliament session. Masquerading as a State Bank of India (SBI) manager, Ansari asked for the ATM PIN and OTP number from Preneet Kaur. He told Preneet that her salary has to be credited in the account and the vital information is needed immediately. After securing the PIN and OTP, Rs 23 lakh was withdrawn from Preneet Kaur's account in three transactions.

Notably, Jamtara in Jharkhand has carved out a name for being notorious and a hub of cybercrime. Located in the Santhal Pargana region, the district has been a crime-prone zone for a long time.
