Amethi (Uttar Pradesh): Surendra Pratap Singh, a close aide of Bharatiya Janta Party leader Smriti Irani was shot dead at his residence in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi around 3 pm on Saturday night by unidentified assailants.
Singh had earlier served as the Gram Sabha Pradhan of Amethi's Baraulia, a cluster of 10 villages in Amethi, adapted by former BJP leader Manohar Parrikar under the center's Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojna.
Singh's family has alleged political enmity behind the murder following the victory of BJP leader Smriti Irani from Amethi in the recently concluded Lok Sabha election.
"We are not aware of any such personal enmity but it might be politically motivated. A day before yesterday he had distributed sweets and had taken part in a procession celebrating Smriti Irani's victory from Amethi, " said Dhiren Pratap Singh, a relative of Singh.
Police, meanwhile, has arrested a few suspects and has sent Singh's body to Lucknow for post-mortem.
"We have arrested a few suspects and are investigating the case further. We are looking into every possible motive behind the murder," said Rajesh Kumar, Superintendent of Police, Amethi.
