"This is a very disappointing night for the Labour Party with the result that we have got," said Corbyn.

Britain's opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said Friday he will stand down as party leader following the party's heavy defeat in the general election.

Corbyn's statement came after both the exit polls and initial official results showed a clear victory for the Conservative Party in the 2019 general elections.

A victory for incumbent Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the Conservatives would mean that they will plow ahead with the Brexit dashing all chances of a second referendum over the issue.

The exit poll had suggested the Conservatives would win 368 seats in the 650-seat parliament with the main opposition Labour party trailing on 191.

The party needs 322 seats to control Parliament and push through Johnson's Brexit plan.

This was Britain's third general election in a little more than four years, and the second since the June 2016 Brexit referendum.
