Watch: Europe's largest active volcano spews lava

This latest eruption caused dust to rain on nearby towns and across an extensive area. Recently the volcano has been erupting at regular intervals with lava fountains and ash rain lasting a few hours. Etna is the largest of Italy's three active volcanoes.

Zafferana Etnea (Italy): Europe's largest active volcano erupted Saturday, releasing ash and orange lava into the air. The eruption of Italy's Mount Etna lasted for a few hours and occurred at the southwest crater at an altitude of about 1800 metres.

This latest eruption caused dust to rain on nearby towns and across an extensive area. Recently the volcano has been erupting at regular intervals with lava fountains and ash rain lasting a few hours. Etna is the largest of Italy's three active volcanoes.

In February this year, the volcano had turned active again. Eruption in February had had led to the closure of a nearby Catania airport and heavy ash falls in surrounding areas disrupted normal life. Etna is a popular tourist destination and its eruptions, especially when seen at night, are spectacular to watch.
