Kiev- After years-old dispute, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Monday has called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to meet for talks on eastern Ukraine with him and other world leaders.

In a video statement, Zelenskiy said, "I would like to address the President of Russian Federation Vladimir Putin. We need to talk. Yes, we do. Let's do it. Let's discuss whose is Crimea and who isn't present in Donbas."

He also suggested the US President Donald Trump, British PM Theresa May, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron for the talks.

Putin's spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that it would "certainly be reviewed."

Zelenskiy said that this was a new initiative and the role of the US would have to be clarified since it was not part of the Normandy format talks on Ukraine before.

Normandy format is a diplomatic group of representatives of Germany, Russia, Ukraine, and France to resolve the eastern Ukraine issue.

Earlier in 2014, the then Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko approved a deal with the EU to remove export tariffs.

The attempt triggered Russia and its special forces occupied Ukraine's Crimean peninsula. Russia said that it was protecting its port access to the black sea.
