Madrid: The coronavirus death toll in Spain surged to 2,182 after 462 people died within 24 hours, the health ministry said on Monday.
The death rate showed a 27 percent increase in the figures released a day earlier with the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 rising to 33,089 in Spain, one of the worst-hit countries in the world after China and Italy.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Sunday announced plans to extend the nationwide state of emergency for a further 15 days.
It means the lockdown will last for at least one month.
Spain is the second hardest-hit country in Europe by the virus.
The coronavirus pandemic has infected more than 349,000 people and killed over 15,000. The COVID-19 illness causes mild or moderate symptoms in most people, but severe symptoms are more likely in the elderly or those with existing health problems.
