Edinburgh: UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson's decision to suspend the Parliament less than two months before Britain is due to leave the European Union was unlawful, a Scottish court ruled on Wednesday although it didn't order the suspension to be overturned.

Judges at Scotland's highest court in Edinburgh said that Britain's Supreme Court must make the final decision.

A hearing there is due to begin next Tuesday.

Speaking outside the court in Edinburgh following the decision, Scottish National Party (SNP) MP for Edinburgh South West, Joanna Cherry said, "It was good to get a message to Johnson from Scotland that you can't break the law without consequences."

SNP MP for Edinburgh East, Tommy Sheppard said that Parliament should be recalled immediately to get an extension on legislation to avoid a no-deal Brexit.

"Get rid of this government and give people of Scotland the option of choosing an independent alternative," he added.

The British government said that it was disappointed by the decision and confirmed it would appeal to the Supreme Court.
