'Nature-positive' solutions can create 39.5 crore jobs in next 10 years: WEF

A new study by the World Economic Forum has found that putting nature first is good for business and economic resilience. The report suggests that 'nature-positive' solutions will create $10.1 trillion in business opportunity and crores of new jobs.

Geneva (Switzerland): Businesses could create 39.5 crore jobs and tap into a $10.1 trillion business opportunity by 2030, a new study from the World Economic Forum (WEF) said.

The 'Future of Nature and Business Report' said that businesses could look at 'nature-positive' solutions to create as many as 39.5 crore jobs by 2030.

The report said focusing on industry actions that are 'nature-positive,' meaning that they could add value to nature, could help businesses to tap into a $10.1 trillion business opportunity.

WEF said that governments and businesses across the globe could look at nature-positive outcomes as they look to stimulate growth in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We can address the looming bio-diversity crisis and reset the economy in a way that creates and protects millions of jobs," Akanksha Khatri, Head of the Nature Action Agenda, World Economic Forum was quoted by an official release.

"Public calls are getting louder for businesses and government to do better. We can protect our food supplies, make better use of our infrastructure and tap into new energy sources by transitioning to nature-positive solutions," Khatri added.

The WEF segmented the nature-positive actions into three categories:

FOOD, LAND, AND OCEAN USE

According to WEF, nature-positive solutions can create 19.1 crore new jobs and $3.6 trillion additional revenue or cost savings in this category. It includes creating a more diversified diet of vegetables among people, using technology in large-scale farms, and sustainable ecosystem management in fisheries.

INFRASTRUCTURE AND THE BUILT-ENVIRONMENT

In this category, WEF said 11.7 crore new jobs could be created and $3 trillion in cost savings. Examples include smart buildings with natural light and LEDs, reducing water leakage, and sustainable waste management techniques.

ENERGY AND EXTRACTIVES

Here, WEF states 8.7 crore employment opportunities, and $3.5 trillion in business opportunities by 2030.

Examples include improving resource recovery in mining and resource extraction, refurbishing and reusing automotive parts, and using renewable energy sources.
