Italian PM calls for ceasefire in Libya

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has called for immediate ceasefire in Libya. His call has demanded withdrawal of Libyan National Army forces. His call comes after the worsening situation in Libya following fights between militias loyal to a UN backed weak government currently in power in Libya and the Libyan National Army.

Rome: Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has called for immediate ceasefire in Libya. His call comes after the worsening situation in Libya following fights between militias loyal to a UN backed weak government currently in power in Libya and the Libyan National Army.

The LNA is commanded by Field Marshal Khalifa Hifter. Hifter has the support of Egypt, France, UAE, Russia. Khalifa Hifter came in news for his efforts to throw out Libyan dictator Mummar Gaddafi in 2011. He also fought against the Islamic State.

Hifter's Libyan National Army launched an offensive earlier this month in which 146 people died. An estimated 614 people became victims of this attack. WHO has been unable to specify whether the people who were killed and wounded were civilians or army personnel.

Conte in his call has demanded withdrawal of Libyan National Army forces. He said that war is not the stable solution. On Monday Conte spoke with his Qatar counterpart in Rome. He also said that they are working to prevent continuation of military hostilities.
