Indian-origin student wins GSK UK Young Scientist of the Year award

Diya Vincent won the title for her project 'Microgreens from Goldfish'. In her project, she grew microgreens using fertilised water from an aquarium and then compared them using three different methods. Along with the title, she won prize money of £2,000 (₹1,87,813).

Hyderabad: In a landmark achievement, Indian-origin girl Diya Vincent, a Year 7 student from Sevenoaks School in England's Kent has bagged the GSK UK Young Scientist of the Year.

She won the title for her project 'Microgreens from Goldfish'. In her project, she grew microgreens using fertilised water from an aquarium and then compared them using three different methods. Along with the title, she won prize money of £2,000 (₹1,87,813).

"There were 1,000 applicants in the preliminary round and this was my first attempt. It made me nervous though I was excited to present my idea borrowed from what I have seen my grandfather do in Thiruvananthapuram," media reported quoting the 12-year-old.

"He has a small pond filled with colourful small fish in his garden outside and he grows spinach in it," she added.
