Mirage 2000's role in 'Kargil Conflict'

During the 1999 'Kargil Conflict', the Indian Air Force (IAF) deployed the Mirage 2000s as the lead fighter jet to tackle the intruders across the mountainous Kargil region.

Vajra's role in the Kargil conflict showcased the aircraft's versatility at high altitudes in mountain warfare, as it had destroyed critical enemy positions at Tiger Hill and broke supply lines using laser-guided bombs.

Impressed with the aircraft's performance, the IAF sought to induct another 126 Mirage 2000s to its fleet, which further paved the way for its replacement by 36 Dassault Rafales, a medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA).

Among the IAF's aircrafts, Mirage 2000 and Jaguar are the only ones capable of delivering nuclear payloads.
