New Delhi: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrived here on Tuesday to hold talks with the top Indian leadership, the first high-level visit from any country following the Lok Sabha polls.
Issues to be discussed:
US Secretary of State's visit comes at a critical juncture as relations between both countries have taken a downward spree in recent times.
External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar who was in Gujarat's Gandhinagar for filing of his Rajya Sabha nomination told reporters there that trade issues between both countries will definitely be discussed tomorrow during their first official meet.
He also said that he will meet Secretary Pompeo with a positive attitude to find common ground to resolve trade issues pertaining between both nations.
Apart from this, issues like terrorism, H1B Visa, S400 missile deal with Russia and US sanctions on India's third-largest oil supplier Iran will certainly be taken up at the meeting.
Pompeo's Schedule:
On Wednesday, Mike Pompeo will start his day, first by meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He is likely to extend President Trump's greetings to PM Modi on his re-election.
Pompeo's visit comes ahead of first bilateral meet between US President Donald Trump and PM Modi in Osaka, Japan at the G20 summit.
In the afternoon, he will meet Dr. S Jaishankar. After which both leaders will give press statements. During these meets, India is likely to urge Washington to de-escalate tensions with Tehran.
