Kuala Lumpur: The United Nations on Saturday appealed for all sides to cease violence in Hong Kong after widespread overnight arson attacks, looting, fighting with police and beatings occurred.
The High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet said that the UN was "troubled" by the high level of violence associated with the pro-democracy protests.
She further condemned "all acts of violence from all sides" and called on those involved to protest peacefully.
Speaking on the anti-mask ban put in place by Hong Kong's embattled leader, Bachelet said in some circumstances it was curtailing the freedom of expression and peaceful assembly for protesters.
"But on the other hand we cannot accept people who use masks to provoke violence, that is also not acceptable," she added.
Reportedly, Bachelet is in Malaysia for a 2-day visit to the southeast Asian country.
