Kaliningrad: Russians have revived drive-in cinemas, giving life to old-world charms in a bid to beat boredom amid the country's coronavirus lockdown.

One open-air movie theatre has opened in Kaliningrad, and another is set to open in Saint Petersburg. Normal cinemas across Russia remain shut.

Dozens of Kaliningrad locals drove into their parking slots on Monday, in front of a big screen.

Drivers and their passengers were asked not to leave their cars and to observe social distancing.

The sound was set up through the car stereo systems, and visitors were able to order soft drinks and popcorn by switching on their blinkers.

Drive-in cinemas have been rare in Russia for years.

Russia reported more than 3,60,000 confirmed coronavirus cases on Tuesday and more than 3,800 deaths.

However, the number of infections is thought to be far higher because many people have not been tested, and studies suggest people can be infected with the virus without feeling sick.

The new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms for most people. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness or death.
