Yangon: Protesters gathered in Myanmar's capital on Wednesday, after the military-backed main opposition party rejected the results of the last elections, citing unfairness.

The group of around 50 people formed outside the offices of the Union Election Commission (UEC) in Naypyitaw.

Police with batons and shields stood guard inside the UEC compound.

Meanwhile, speaking at a Yangon news conference, a Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) official demanded the Commission hold another election, adding it should work with the military to ensure it was free and unbiased.

The UEC responded saying it had no comment on the UDSP's accusations as they were unaware of the underlying evidence.

Earlier, USDP chairman Than Htay said there had been many "contentious events" during the voting process and that "more facts" were emerging.

An unofficial tabulation of the vote from Myanmar's general election showed Tuesday that the ruling National League for Democracy party of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi won an absolute majority of seats in Parliament, giving it a second five-year term in power.

The official results of Sunday's election posted online by the state Union Election Commission lagged far behind, but also showed the advantage of going to the NLD.

They confirmed that Suu Kyi won the seat she contested. The NLD claimed victory on Monday.

Yway Mal, an independent vote counting service, said that as of Wednesday, NLD had won 361 seats so far in the combined upper and lower houses, exceeding the 322 needed for control.

The USDP has so far captured 21 seats, the agency said. It said 48 seats were won by other parties.
