Netanyahu becomes Israel's longest-serving PM

Jerusalem: Benjamin Netanyahu created history for being the longest-serving Israeli prime minister, edging out the country's founding father David Ben Gurion.

As a prime minister, he has led the government for 13 years and 127 days, which is equal to 4,873 days nearly 19 per cent of the country's entire history.

He secured his fifth-term earlier this year but has called fresh elections after failing to form a government.

Of late, however, his government is facing corruption charges and there are calls for his resignation. Although he has denied any wrongdoing and alleges that the case is politically motivated.

At 46, he became Israel's youngest prime minister after winning the 1996 election.

As head of the right-wing Likud party, Netanyahu has a reputation as a hardliner on the Israel-Palestinian peace process.

On Palestine, Netanyahu took an uncompromising stand and declared that there will be no evacuations for the Jewish settlers nor the creation of a full-fledged Palestinian state.

He has also withdrawn from the Hebron city in 1998 handing most of it to the Palestinian authority, but he is a staunch opponent of the land-for-peace formula.

Netanyahu faces a tough challenge from political opponents, including former prime minister Ehud Barak and a former military chief-of-staff, who are seeking to topple him in the elections on September 17.
