Chinese envoy meets Prachanda amid Oli's uncertain future

Amid the intense involvement of Hou Yanqi in Nepal's internal affairs, the ruling party has failed to address its internal rifts as KP Sharma Oli and Prachanda haven't reached a consensus despite holding over half-a-dozen meetings in a week.

Kathmandu: China's Ambassador to Nepal Hou Yanqi on Thursday met the ruling party's executive chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' amid intra-party rifts, The Kathmandu Post reported.

Hou reached Dahal's residence around 9 am on Thursday morning and held one-on-one talks for 50 minutes, The Kathmandu Post reported.

Amid the political uncertainty in Nepal and growing calls for Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's resignation, Hou held talks with President Bidhya Devi Bhandari, Oli and other ruling party leaders.

Nepal's Communist Party has failed to address the intra-party rifts as K P Sharma Oli and Prachanda have failed to reach a consensus despite holding over half-a-dozen meetings in a week, a media report said on Thursday.

On Wednesday, a crucial meeting of the NCP's 45-member Standing Committee was postponed till Friday. The meeting was deferred for the fourth consecutive time in a bid to provide enough time for the two chairmen of the party to sort out their differences amidst the heightened intra-party rift.

The political future of 68-year-old Oil is expected to be decided on Friday during the Standing Committee meeting, amid the growing involvement of Hou Yanqui.

The Prachanda faction, backed by senior leaders and former prime ministers Madhav Kumar Nepal and Jhalanath Khanal, has been demanding Oli's resignation, saying his recent anti-India remarks were "neither politically correct nor diplomatically appropriate".
