1. SOUNDBITE (English) Luciana Berger, independent British MP (formerly from opposition Labour Party):
"Well within the group there are colleagues that have faced motions of no confidence. I certainly saw them surface last week and disappear again. Others that haven't. But it would be much easier for all of us collectively just to carry on as usual and pretend like there's nothing wrong, it would be much easier to stay quiet but actually we've come together in the national interest because we think that the status quo is not OK and that we have a responsibility on behalf of our constituents that we are elected to represent, and the country, to do something about it. It would be much easier to just not say or do anything but actually we've taken this stand today because we think it's the right thing to do."

2. SOUNDBITE (English) Luciana Berger, independent British MP (formerly from opposition Labour Party):
"Well it's very clear if we look at various different polls that there is very, very little trust in any of the main political parties at this moment in time because of the way in which we're seeing very little leadership from all of the political parties, the way in which we know we're not seeing anything tangible being put forward to contend with those issues that are at the core of what the country is concerned about. And on that basis I have a responsibility as a member of parliament to do something on behalf of my constituents. I don't think the status quo is acceptable and therefore that's why I've made this decision today."

3. SOUNDBITE (English) Luciana Berger, independent British MP (formerly from opposition Labour Party):
"In terms of by-elections, as I said, I set out very clearly my values that led me to put myself forward as a candidate back in 2009 and which I've stood for and been very proud of and spoken very clearly about over the course of the past nine years and in particular election time have not changed. I am still the same person. Those values that I hold dear not essentially drive me on a daily basis on behalf of my constituents remain the same."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Luciana Berger, independent British MP (formerly from opposition Labour Party):
"I think at this particular juncture, at this particular moment, by-elections wouldn't be very, very helpful because we find ourselves in the midst of Brexit (that) we need to first and foremost contend with and that for me is what I'm focusing on."

STORYLINE:
Former Labour MP Luciana Berger said on Monday that she quit the UK's main opposition party because was responsible to "do something" on behalf of her constituents.
Berger was among seven Labour who resigned on Monday over the party's approach to issues including Brexit and anti-Semitism - the biggest shake-up in years for one of Britain's major political parties.
Earlier in her announcement speech, Berger said Labour had become "institutionally anti-Semitic".
Labour leaders have admitted that Berger, who is Jewish, has been bullied by some members of her local party in northwest England.
Senior figures in the party called for all seven MPs to hold by-elections in their constituencies.
Berger ruled that out, saying a by-election would not be "very helpful" while politicians struggled to contend with Brexit.
Monday's announcement ripped open a long-simmering rift between socialists and centrists in the party, which sees itself as the representative of Britain's working class.
It's also the latest fallout from Britain's decision to leave the European Union, which has split both of the country's two main parties - Conservatives and Labour - into pro-Brexit and pro-EU camps.
