18 killed, 100 wounded in a suicide attack in Kabul

The bomber detonated his car at a security checkpoint belonging to a nearby police station. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

Kabul: At least 18 people were killed and over 100 wounded on Wednesday after a suicide car bomber targeted the police district six (PD6) headquarter in western Kabul.

The attack occurred at 9 a.m. in police district 6 when a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device detonated, apparently targeting the checkpoint belonging to a nearby police station.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

Media showed a large plume of smoke rising above the part of Kabul. The facade of one multi-story building had been ripped away.

Interior ministry's spokesman Nusrat Rahimi dismissed reports that explosion was followed by gunfighting.Taliban have been staging near-daily attacks across the country, usually targeting Afghan forces and government officials or those seen as loyal to the government.Wednesday's attack came against the backdrop of another round of talks this week between the Taliban and the US in the Gulf Arab state of Qatar, where the insurgents maintain an office.
