The commander of the carrier's strike group Rear Admiral John F.G. Wade declined to comment when asked about the current stationing of the aircraft carrier. However, he said Iran had presented "credible threats" to the region.

"They do impose a threat to our operations, but also to the safety and security of commerce and trade going through the Strait of Hormuz and that's why we are here," Wade said.

In May, the White House deployed Lincoln and its strike group to Middle East to avoid possible threats from Iran.

It's also sent B-52 bombers and ordered hundreds of troops to the area.

Along with Lincoln the USS Bainbridge, the USS Mason and the USS Nitze - as well as the guided-missile cruiser the USS Leyte Gulf are also deployed to Middle East.

On Sunday a B-52 bomber conducted a training exercise with the Lincoln which included simulated strike operations, the US Air Force announced.

Tensions with Iran have worsened since the US pulled out itself of Iran's nuclear deal last year and imposed sanctions on Tehran.
