Washington: Kevin Hassett, a top economist of White House will be leaving soon.
Hassett told reporters that he had already spoken to President Donald Trump about his resignation plan last week.
He said that it is 'a little bit sad' to leave the post but said, "I think it's time for me to move on."
Hassett, who is the chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, said that CEA chairs are expected to change about every two years.
"The longer you stay here the closer you get with everybody and maybe the harder it is to be objective. And so I think it a celebration really of the organization," Hassett said of his planned departure.
Hassett began serving in the US Senate from September 2017.
In a tweet on Sunday night, Trump said that Hassett will be departing 'shortly' and praised him for having 'done such a great job for me and the Administration'.
Trump said that he will name a 'very talented replacement' as soon as he returns to the U.S. from his trip to Europe.
The president added: "I want to thank Kevin for all he has done - he is a true friend!"
