Lee County (Alabama): A tornado roared into southeast Alabama and killed at least 23 people and injured several others on Sunday, part of a severe storm system that caused catastrophic damage and unleashed other tornadoes around the Southeast.

"Unfortunately our toll, as far as fatalities, does stand at 23 at the current time," Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones said of the death toll.

Drones flying overheard equipped with heat-seeking devices had scanned the area for survivors but the dangerous conditions halted the search late Sunday, a local official said.

An intense ground search would resume Monday morning.

The National Weather Service confirmed late Sunday a tornado with at least an F3 rating and a track at least half a mile (.8 kilometers) wide caused the deadly destruction in Alabama.

Dozens of emergency responders rushed to join search and rescue efforts in hard-hit Lee County after what forecasters said they think was a large tornado touched down Sunday afternoon, unleashed by a powerful storm system that also slashed its way across parts of Georgia, South Carolina and Florida.

STORYLINE:
An apparent tornado roaring across southeast Alabama killed at least 14 people and injured several others on Sunday as severe storms destroyed mobile homes, snapped trees and scattered destruction and weather warnings into the US states of Georgia, Florida and South Carolina.
Authorities were blocking traffic to some of the most heavily damaged areas in an Alabama county where the sheriff says at least 14 people are confirmed dead.
In the Georgian city of Byron, footage captured by a local resident, Greg Martin, showed a funnel cloud forming in the distance after the National Weather Service issued several tornado warnings across the Deep South.
Martin told the Associated Press he first noticed the storm brewing as he was driving back home and then decided to drive closer toward it to film it.
He said he did not see a lot of damage to the houses in the area as the funnel had passed mostly through farmland, according to Martin.
Martin added he wasn't a professional storm chaser but enjoyed the thrill of it and said he did it as a hobby.
Weather officials said they confirmed other tornadoes around the region by radar alone and would send teams out early Monday to assess those and other storms.
