Burnaby: Canadian New Democratic leader Jagmeet Singh has congratulated Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and also vowed to be a 'constructive' participant in the new Parliament.

Although after winning the election the Liberal Party has to ally with the smaller parties to utilize the chance of government formation.

Still, the Liberals were poised to fall short of a majority, meaning they will have to rely on an opposition party to stay in power.

Trudeau is expected to rely on the leftist New Democrats for support at times to pass legislation.

With results still trickling in early Tuesday, the Liberals had 157 seats - 13 short of the 170 needed for a majority in the 338-seat House of Commons.

Trudeau on Tuesday said that serving as prime minister had been the 'greatest honour' of his life and thanked Canadians for sending his party 'back to work'.
