Mexico City: Hundreds of cars with one or more passengers aboard paraded in a caravan along the main avenues of Mexico City on Saturday to demand the resignation of Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
Grouped in an organization called FRENA (National Front Against AMLO), citizens called through social networks met in front of the national palace to complete two laps around the capital's central square the Zocalo while beeping horns to protest against the President's handling of the new coronavirus pandemic.
Demonstrators claim the President is setting a bad example by going on the road to promote his insignia projects at the peak of the new virus pandemic that has kept Mexicans under orders to stay at home since the end of March.
Carlos Hernandez is a 69-year-old bicycle taxi operator who goes to work every day to support his sick wife and pay his rent. He compared himself to the President by saying that Lopez Obrador, who has more responsibilities has even more reasons to go out.
Lopez Obrador downplayed the numbers and said he's getting back on the road, resuming his travel schedule next week to promote the Mayan train project.

On Saturday Mexico reported a total of 87,512 confirmed COVID-19 cases and at least 9,779 deaths.
However, the number of infections is thought to be far higher because many people have not been tested, and studies suggest people can be infected with the virus without showing symptoms.
