New York: A massive fire that engulfed a large apartment on the fifth floor of a building in the Harlem area of New York killed six occupants Wednesday morning.
New York Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro confirmed the death of the residents. He said that his department received a call around 1.40 in the morning from a person on the sixth floor of that building and that his men rushed immediately.
Nearly 100 firefighters were pressed into service who put out the fire in an hour. But the fire was so fierce that despite the firefighters' aggressive approach, they could not reach the blazing apartment and save the occupants, the fire commissioner said.
