Maduro asks why Trump 'obsessed' with Venezuela

Caracas: During a nationally televised event on Tuesday, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro wondered why US President Donald Trump would talk about Venezuela's issues during his annual State of the Union address.

"Can you give an explanation to Donald Trump's obsession with Venezuela? Do you have any rational explanation? Is it normal?" he asked.

Maduro went on to say Trump was "desperate to steal the oil from the Venezuelan homeland", citing it as the reason for Trump's frequent comments about Venezuela.

The struggle for power in Venezuela resurged this year when congress leader Juan Guaido declared himself interim president, saying Maduro's re-election in May was fraudulent.

The Unites States is gearing up to provide emergency food and medicine to Venezuela, working with Guaido's opposition movement over Maduro's objections.
