Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated Joe Biden on becoming the 46th President of the United States on Wednesday.

"I look forward to working with you to further strengthen the US-Israel alliance, to continue expanding peace between Israel and the Arab world and to confront common challenges, chief among them the threat posed by Iran," Netanyahu told Biden in a video message.

Biden has pledged a more even-handed approach to the Middle East conflict in which he will restore aid to the Palestinians and work to revive peace negotiations.

Netanyahu's stance on settlement construction and Iran's nuclear program are likely to put him at odds with the new Biden administration.

Donald Trump's administration provided unprecedented support to Israel, including abandoning a longstanding U.S. policy of opposing settlements.
