Hyderabad: The red carpet for the Met Gala in 2023 had an unexpected Indian connection because it was created in India by a Kerala-based design firm. The annual Met Gala is referred to as fashion's greatest and most extravagant event. The world's biggest celebrities attend the annual event, which is held in New York on the first Monday in May and is organised to raise money for the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. But, the Met Gala also had a connection to India this year.
While Priyanka Chopra made her fifth appearance at the Met Gala this year and Alia Bhatt made her debut, this was not it. Even the crimson carpet was an Indian-made item that found its way to Met Gala. The carpet was beige with a scattering of red and blue lines. Not many were aware that this carpet was manufactured by an Indian design house with headquarters in Kerala.
The carpet used for the Met Gala in 2023 was created by Kerala-based design firm Neytt by Extraweave, which specialises in weaving. The design firm posted multiple posts of the carpet on their official Instagram page. Along with a photo of the carpet at the gala, they said, "A proud moment for our team to provide carpets to the Met Gala for the second consecutive year."
According to reports, it took 60 days to make the carpet that was used at the 2023 Met Gala. The 58 rolls, each measuring 30 by 4 metres, made up the 6960 square metres of carpet. Before being used at the Met Gala, they were produced in India and then individually hand-painted by artists in the US.
Natasha Poonawala and Isha Ambani were also in attendance from among the Indians. This year's Met Gala honoured the late, iconic German designer with the theme Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty. Everything was in keeping with Lagerfeld's sense of style and aesthetics, from the guests' attire to the decor and the carpet.
