A woman accused in a murder case was stripped naked and beaten with sticks by the family members of the deceased while everyone in the village watched.

Suryapet: A woman accused in a murder case was stripped naked and beaten with sticks by the family members of the deceased while everyone in the village watched. The atrocity, which took place on Saturday in Rajunaik Thanda in the Suryapet district, came to light on Sunday.

Shankar Nayak of Rajunayaktanda of Suryapeta Mandal was killed on June 13. The woman was arrested by the police on suspicion of having an affair with Shankar Nayak's relatives. She was recently released from jail on court bail and has been living in her sister's house in Suryapet.

The woman went there after a relative of Rajunayak's died on Saturday. His relatives were outraged when they saw her for the first time since Shankar Nayak was killed.

She was locked out of the house and stripped naked. They sprayed chilli powder in his eyes. No one came to stop the continuing atrocity against her, which lasted for almost an hour on the sidewalk.

With no respite, the victim ran to the MPTC (Mandal parishad territorial constituency) member Santabai's house. Santabai give her dress and guarded the room till the police came and shifted the victim to Suryapeta Government Hospital amid a tense situation.

The victim had lodged a complaint with the police alleging that Lunawat Bharathi, Banotu Jyoti, Lunawat Padma, Jyothi, Sunita, Pimpli, Rajesh, Supriya, Kishan and another girl had assaulted her.

The Sarpanch, who witnessed the atrocities against him, said the village elders did not stop him. A case has been registered and investigations are underway over the incident, said Suryapeta Rural sub-inspector Lavakumar.
