Did Bihar government hide Covid19 death figures?

Contrary to the claims by Bihar's Health Department that 5,458 people have died due to corona in the state, Principal Secretary Pratyaya Amrit said that the revised number of Covid19 fatalities now stands at 9,429.

Patna (Bihar): The functioning of the Health Department in Bihar has come under the scanner, as Bihar drastically revised the total number of COVID-19 fatalities in the state from 5,458 to 9,429. Following verification of the Covid death figures, around 3,951 deaths were added to the toll on Wednesday, taking the total number of deaths close to 10,000.

Taking into account the district-wise numbers, Patna has had the highest number of deaths. Earlier, it was reported that 1233 people died due to COVID complications but now the Health Department has confirmed that 1070 new deaths took place in Patna, taking the total to 2303, while in Muzaffarpur 609, Begusarai 454 and Darbhanga 342 deaths were reported.

Issuing a clarification on the same, Principal Secretary of Health Department, Pratyaya Amrit said that a committee was constituted at the district level and reports have been sought from panchayats. After getting information from all the places, there has been an increase of 3,951 deaths. Also, as per Bihar government records 10,000 people have died so far. Even, Black Fungus has claimed 55 lives in the state. At present, 98 infected persons have recovered from Covid and around 368 infected patients are undergoing treatment.

  • On Wednesday, 589 Covid positive cases and 20 deaths were reported, while in Patna alone 55 positive cases were reported.
  • Increase in the number of deaths due to corona - 3,951
  • Number of active patients- 7,353
  • Those recovered as on Wednesday - 1,114
  • Following the verification of Covid deaths on Wednesday - 1,00,196
  • Recovery Rate - 97.65%
  • Total infected so far - 7,15,189
  • Total recovered so far - 6,98,397
  • Total deaths so far - 9,431
  • Total investigation so far -3,08,76,628

This revision in Covid death figures could turn a thorn in the flesh situation for Bihar CM Nitish Kumar who has been alleged by the opposition of having failed to handle the pandemic.
